One who is as white as a garland of kunda flowers and waterdrops, who has worn white apparel; Whose hand is placed on the stem of the Veena, who is seated on a white lotus;

What is velour? It is the conquest of the senses. Who is the beloved wife? One who is devoted to her husband. What is wealth? It is knowledge. What is happiness? It is to remain settled in one's own country. What is ruler ship? It is to command obedience.
Patience

An enemy, though powerful can be easily uprooted by a patient person, if he is shaken by the wind of disaffection and if his supporters are gradually estranged, like a tree which, though big, can be easily uprooted shaken by the wind and its mass of roots gradually giving way.
Valor

One Son

One good and noble son is better than a hundred fool sons. Only one moon lights the sky, where as thousand stars do not. Similarly one noble son brings fame and respect to family than hundred fools.

Mine and His

He is mine and he is other, is the thought that narrow minded people have. For noble people, entire world is family.
“What we call Sanskrit is the divine language, as commented upon by the great sages.”
Guru

“Knowledge is certainly a man’s greatest beauty. It is a safe and hidden treasure.
It provides prosperity, fame and happiness. Knowledge is the teacher of all teachers.
It acts as one’s friend in a foreign country. Knowledge is the Supreme God.
It is the knowledge, not wealth, which is adored by kings. Without knowledge one remains as animal.”

How Yudhishthira fail to know

Golden Deer

Neither has one made golden deer nor has anyone seen a golden deer. Even though, Ram desired to get the golden deer. In the time of destruction the intelligence goes opposite.

That which does not create attachments is a good action. All other actions only drain your energy. Only the education that liberates is the right kind. All other education is like sculpturing.
Goes to Hell
If people who cut trees, kill animals and spill blood go to heaven then who goes to hell?
Slow processes
A pot gets filled by water falling into it one drop at a time. It may take a lot of time, but it does get filled. Such is the story of accumulation of knowledge (via education), good karma (by doing noble deeds), and wealth. All of these are very slow processes.
Sacrifice for the Cause
As long as one lives, one should live happily, feasting on clarified butter (ghee), even by incurring debt because once this body is reduced to ashes, it will not be acquired again. Everyone will readily listen to such advice but very few are inclined towards service and sacrifice for a spiritual cause.
It is not a sin to eat non-veg food, not a sin to drink alcohol and not a sin to make love. These are only natural to all beings. If one can abstain from all these, then one can achieve great results.
Salute to the Guru
Salute to the guru, who opens eyes of a person blind due to darkness of ignorance, by knowledge (GYAna). Guru is one of the most honorable personalities in Indian
(Hindu) tradition. This Subhashita demonstrates Guru's role in one's life. Difference
between an ignorant person and a knowledgeable person is stated as difference
between a blind and a person with normal eyesight. Guru is a person who gives sight to otherwise blind person.
Where not to live ?
There, O friend, not to be dwelt where not is a collection of the four, a creditor and, a physician and, a Brahman learned in the Vedas, full of water a river.
Famous
By breaking pots, by tearing clothes, by riding on a donkey.
By some way or the other (hook or crook), one should become a popular person!

This is a satire to people always wanting to be popular. A few people are always engaged in these "घटं भिन्द्यात् " types of activities and by that they earn fame, they've got nothing else to bank on. Obviously Subhaashitkar is asking us to check whether we are doing anything like that.
Knowledge
Among all things knowledge only, they say, is a supreme treasure because it cannot be stolen, it is priceless and always imperishable.
Six Fault To Avoid
The six faults should be avoided by a person who wishes to attain prosperity, viz., sleep, drowsiness, fear, anger, indolence(inactivity resulting from a dislike of work) and procrastination.
Dharma
Dharma destroys those who destroy the dharma by going against it. Dharma protects the person who protects it. Hence, dharma should not be destroyed but protected. Dharma that is destroyed, destroys.
Spending Time

A intelligent ('buddhiman') man spends his time in the research and studies of literature ('Kaavya') and philosophy ('Shastras' like Veda Shastra, dharma shastra etc.). Or in other words the said subjects are means of his entertainment (He gets satisfaction due to the studies of 'kaavya' and philosophy). In contrast a unintelligent ('Murkha') man gets satisfaction in bad habits like sleep (Laziness), quarrel or some type of addiction. Tatparya (Conclusion): In this subhaashita the subhaashitkar has in short advised the reader that how should one spend his/her time!! May be according to him a 'buddhiman' is a person who invests his time in order to get some thing 'valuable' and long lasting!!
Wise Man
The wise man walks with one foot and stands on one foot. Never steps onto a new place without examinig it. Without examining the next place, he does not leave the previous abode.
Truth
Telling truth is recommended, but more than that, tell those things which are in interest of all. According to me (nArada here) thing which is beneficial to large community, is truth.
Human
In this world, to take birth in the human race is rare, wherein to obtain knowledge and wisdom is even harder. Further to have a noble character is harder and further still is modesty.
Good Company
You can't even notice a hint of a drop of water fallen on hot iron. The same drop shines like a pearl on a lotus leaf. And in the 'swati' nakShatra fallen inside a sea shell, it becomes a pearl. Usually excellent, medium and bad states (of a person) are dependent on company.
Care of Women
In childhood, a woman is protected by her father, by her husband in her youth and by her sons in her old age. A woman should never be left alone to fend for herself.
Powerful person
A person with enthusiasm is a powerful person. There is nothing as powerful as enthusiasm. nothing is impossible ('durlabhah' literally means unachievable) to an enthusiastic person. This subhashit says "If there is a will, there is a way." Nothing is impossible; one must
push it till the end.
Into the deep water
There are two types of people who should be pushed in deep water with heavy stones tied to their body! One who does not donate in-spite of being rich and the other who does not work hard in-spite of being poor !!
Miserable
These six are always miserable, viz., the envious, the malicious, the discontented, the irascible, the ever-suspicious, and those depending upon the fortunes of others.

Pleasures of Giving
The fruit of giving cloth in charity is attainment of kingdom; that of footwear is attainment of vehicle; that of Tamboolam is enjoyment of pleasure. One gains all the above by giving food to the poor.

Tamboolam: The leaf of piper-betel, which together with areca-nut, catechu, chunam(lime), and spices is usually chewed after meals.
In Vain
Attainment of wealth by an incompetent person, knowledge by a man of ignoble
descent, a woman by undeserving person, etc are in vain like the rainfall on a mountain.
Evil

Even a good turn done to a bad man results in evil. Drinking of milk by snakes is only going to result in increase of their poison.
Leading Destruction

It has never happened before, nobody has heard about, no body has seen a golden deer. But, ShriRama's greed (about it) is unfavorable intention leading to destruction.
God will help
God will help provided the six qualities effort, adventure, courage, knowledge, strength and bravery exist.
What is Impossible?

What is impossible for those who are competent? Does distance matter to those who are industrious? Which is foreign land for the learned persons? Who is a stranger for those who talk sweetly?
Self-esteem and wealth
Those who have wealth of self-esteem, live long life. For those who don't have self-esteem, what is use of wealth and long life? Subhashitkar here is trying to portray importance of self esteem in life. If one has it, he is as good as living long life. If a person does not have it, then according to subhaashitkar, life and wealth he has, is useless.
Changing Character
If an onion plant is grown in camphor bed, musk is used as a soil for it, or it is watered with Ganga-jala (the holiest of the waters), will it give up its characteristic pungent odour? The central idea is that a person's basic character remains the same, no matter what efforts you take to change him.
Serpent and a wicked person
When it comes to comparison between a serpent and a wicked person, it is the serpent who is the better of the two. (Because,) a serpent bites occasionally( very seldom). But, the wicked person stings(causes pain) at every step(always).
Seeing and Speaking

Seeing is given twice as much importance as speaking by Brahma. Man has two eyes, however, only one tongue was created.
Tailabuddhi

A person who travels in different-different countries, ('desha' can also be translated as direction here.). a person who serves scholars (learned person), his intelligence expands or develops as drop of oil on water surface. Often, a person who is very sharp is called 'tailabuddhi'. When a drop of oil falls on water surface, it spreads over water and forms layer of oil; in that way a drop of oil 'covers' water surface (oil is taila in sanskrit). Similarly intelligence (buddhi) of a person (his grasping power) covers all the subjects. Here, subhasitkar says that, a person who travels a lot (and hence meets many people) and is in contact with 'pundits' develops his brain like that drop of oil in water.
Our and Foreign
The person with whom we have no relation, but who helps us in our difficult times is our Real relative/brother. In contrast the person who may be our relative/brother (With whom we have blood relations) but who always does bad things for us should not be considered as our relative/brother. Just like a disease which is in our own body does so much harm to us while the medicinal plant which grows in forest far off does so much of good to us!
Knowledge, Wealth and Religion
The wise man acquires knowledge and wealth as if he is never going to die. And he practices religion as if he is tightly held in his hair by death.
From distance
Mountain look very spectacular from distance. Prostitutes look very beautiful when they make-up. War stories are very interesting. All these three things are interesting from distance (Better be away from them).
Wake Up from Sleep
Wake from sleep the 7 persons mentioned below: student, servant, traveller, a hungry person, a person struck with fear, a porter and watchman.
Intellects endued with wisdom

They that do not strive for objects that are unattainable, that do not grieve for what is lost and gone, that do not suffer their minds to be clouded amid calamities, are regarded to possess intellects endued with wisdom.
Animals and People
Those who do not have learning, have no austerity, do not give to charity, have neither knowledge nor character, have no good qualities no righteousness. They, on this Mrutyuloka, on this Earth, are being who are loads (literl translation would be; liabilities, those that only receive and don not contribute in return), in the form of people and are animals that simple graze.
Empty vessels make more noise
A fully filled water container will not create much noise as compared to the half filled one. (When the containers are given some jirk the water inside it will also move and create some noise.). Similarly 'Vidvaan' (Intelligent) people always remain calm and will not have any mis-placed pride as opposed to the people who know very less but always keep talking.
Two Into One
There are many archers who can split one thing into two. But there is only one archer, Manmatha, who unites two into one.
This alludes to the fact that the Lord of Love sends an arrow to unit two people's heart. So the poet takes something that is meant for a singular purpose and uses it in the context of getting an entirely opposite result.
Changing Character
Honey paste on a bitter neem stem, milk feeding for a poisonous snake and Ganga bath for a bad person; none will change their character. The bad qualities do not vanish just by changing outer look. We have to change our inner self.
Character of a fool
Subhashitkar has given some of the characteristics of a fool person here. He says, a fool person comes without invitation (he lands up anywhere even if he is not required i.e. he does not have self respect), talk even if not asked for (they have habit of poking his nose in other's business), and trusts a person who is not trust-able (he is not able to evaluate others properly).
The Lamp
The lamp destroys darkness, it brings health and wealth. Lamp is for the welfare of all humans. O flame of lamp, I bow to you.
Place Worth To Live In
In this meaningless world only one place is worth to live in! And that place is the home of father-in-law! And see therefore Lord Shankar stays in himalayas and Lord Vishnu stays in the Sea!!
Character makes good looks prettier, a clan's reputation is made higher by conduct, (theoretical) learning is enhanced by practical accomplishments and money's worth is enhanced by spending it.
Very Difficult and Very Easy
It is very very difficult to lift the rock till the peak of the mountain. But it is very very easy to get the same rock from the peak to the mountain foot. (You just need to give the first push!). In the same way it is very difficult task to induce noble thoughts in to a person's mind and to make him/her an good individual. But it's far more simple to induce bad habits in a person.

Gold with Iron and Hammer
Wicked person's company is invitation to frequent insults. When gold is with iron and hammer, it gets beaten.
From anywhere
Ambrosia should be obtained even from poison; gold must be taken even if it lies in filth; knowledge has to be received even from a person of lower social status; a woman of beauty and character should be accepted even if she is from a fallen family.
Son
An only son who is educated and virtuous brings joy to the whole family happy just as a single moon brings light at night.
Learned Man
Of what use is nobility of family if a person is illiterate? A learned man is respected by Gods too though he does not belong to a noble family.
Greed

Knowledge is lost by laziness; women are lost when they are in the custody of others; cultivation fails when the quantity of seeds sown is very less; an army without a commander is lost too.
Five Qualities

Hope
Hope is an amazing bonding chain of man. Those who are bonded by it run, and those who are free, remain immobile like disabled.
Work Hard Now For Future
While working hard we do feel a bit of sadness due to the adverse conditions. But surely in future when we think of 'that' work, it gives us the happiness and satisfaction (Of having completed the work up to the expectation). Any good and positive work to be done cannot be done without facing the hardship. At the moment of actually doing the work we may feel the heat of it! But in future the memories of it will surely give a pleasant and cool experience!
Friends

For others
The rivers don't drink their own water. The trees don't eat their own fruits. The clouds don't eat the crops to which they give the water. The wealth of the good people ('sajjan') is really only for helping the others(Excellence of good people are for the welfare of others.).
Rare organizer

The wealth that is not used for the gods, wise men, relatives or for oneself is destroyed by water, enemy, king and thieves.
Difference
Though the blue water lily, lotus, fish and white water lily are born in water, they all have different odours.
Accomplishment of work
Any work will not get accomplished just merely by desiring for it's completion. A 'prey' will not by itself come to the mouth of a sleeping lion.
Five Words
Mother(जननी), motherland (जन्मभूमिः), the river Ganges (जाह्ननवी), God(जनार्दनः) and father(जनकः) are the five words begin ज (जकाराः) with and are very rare(दुर्लभाः ) to get.

How is Knowledge aquired ?
Knowledge is acquired by serving the teacher, or by a lot of money or by exchange of knowledge. A fourth path is not available.

Principles of Virtue
Split

Courage (धृतिः), patience (forgiveness) (क्षमा),control of senses (दमः),non-stealing (अस्तेयं),purity, control of organs(इन्द्रियनिग्रहः), intellect (धिः), knowledge (विद्या), truthfulness (सत्यम्), free from anger(अक्रोधः) are the ten principles of virtue.
For others
Trees give fruits to assist others. Rivers flow to help others. Cows produce milk to feed others. In the same way, our own human body should also be employed for the assistance of others.
Five Mothers
Wife of Guru (गुरुपत्नी),the queen (राजपत्नी), wife of elder-brother (ज्येष्टपत्नी), mother-in-law (पत्नीमाता) and own mother(स्वमाता) are five mothers.
Father
Father, the preceptor (one who performs the sacred thread ceremony), one who gives the knowledge, one who offer food, gives shelter (save us from fear) are considered as father.
How Can A Lazy?

How can a lazy one get educated, how can an uneducated man earn wealth, how can a penniless man have friends, and how can anyone be happy without friends ?
On Subhashitam

Among languages (भाषासु), the most important (मुख्या), the most sweet (मधुरा), the most divine (दिव्या) is Sanskrit (गीर्वाणभारती). Conveying the idea, more than that a poem(काव्यं) is sweet (मधुरं) and conveying the idea, more than that is a good saying (सुभाषितम्).

Never Forget The Help
Just as a coconut tree bears the weight of coconuts on its head and gives nectarine water throughout its life in return for a little water that was given to it during the first year, a saintly person never forgets the help that he had received.

Mother and Motherland

Lakshman, This Golden Lanka does not allure me. Mother and Motherland is dearer to me even than heaven. This 'Shloka' is from the conversation between Lord Shree Ram and Lakshmana in 'Valmiki Ramayana'. It is very appropriate to remember the shloka on the occasion of Vijayadashami. Over six thousand years ago, after the great Victory over Ravana, on the day of Vijayadashami, Lord Shree Ram tells Lakshmana that He was not interested in the wealth of Lanka and did never want to rule Lanka. He would rather go back to His Motherland. Later 'Vibheeshana' was made the king of Lanka.

The Perfect Samaj

There is no kingdom nor any king! No criminal nor any judge to give the penalty to the criminal!! All the people protect each other by the virtue of Dharma. This is a 'varnan' of an 'Aadarsha' samaj !! A samaj which is a 'live' samaj in which each and every individual lives completely up to his responsibility!! Only a samaj which will be made up of such 'ideal' individuals can 'realise' the above subhaashita!!

One example is worth mentioning. If the number of social service organisations such as orphanages, child care centres etc. keep growing then is it a healthy sign of progress of society or not?? Infact such institutions will come up because the relatives or neighbours may have failed to do their Dharma!!

This is told by Bhishmacharya to Yudhisthir in shantiparva (after mahabharat war). While he was lying on "sharapanjari" waiting for bed. Bhishmacharya is generally telling dharmaraja about how good his rule should be. You may have noticed that the subhashit is in past tense.

Three Jewels In This Earth

There are three jewels in this earth. They are water, food and Subhaashita!! But the Fools call the pieces of rocks as Jewels! Subhaashitaa are nothing but the collection of vast experiences of people or in other words wise sayings.

The five senses are sound, touch, sight, taste and smell. Animals that are slaves of any one of them often pay the price by their life. A deer follows the sound (of its calf) and becomes a prey. An elephant is enslaved by its vulnerability of touch behind the head. A moth is driven to the flame by its sight. A fish is baited by its longing for taste. That is knowledge that can arrest the speed at which our senses drive our mind. The subject of our studies should be to know more about the cosmic spirit mentioned in the Upanishats. There are some lucky people in this world who know all about the spirit. The rest of them are wandering in the illusion of knowing it.

Wealth is as fickle as a bubble on water surface. The body is as uncertain as flick of a flame. Youth is as reliable as the trembling look from the corner of the eye of a damsel. The strength in your arms are like lightning. Given all these uncertainties, one must accumulate good karma as early as possible. Start doing some charity, meditation, penance and other good deeds to earn some good karma.

Can we not find torn clothes on the road to cover ourselves? Don’t the trees give us food to eat as alms? The good rivers; can they not give us water to drink? Have the caves been closed? Will the Lord not reach out to those who seek his refuge? In spite of all the basic needs taken care of by nature, why do the scholars have to praise the rich people who are blinded by the intoxication of wealth?

Objectivism
Words conjoined with reason should be perceived from a child as well as a parrot. Those devoid of reason should not be grasped, even coming from Śrī Bṛhaspati himself. (Guru of the Gods)

Another variation of the Subhāṣitā,
Whatever is consistent with right objective reasoning should be accepted even if it comes from a boy or a parrot, and whatever is not, should be rejected even if it comes from an old man or the great sage Śrī Śuka himself.
